One early fundamental difference between Dominicans and Franciscans was the purpose of theology. For Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican, theology is contemplating God as the ultimate perfection, so we can reflect God’s perfection more. Bonaventure, a Franciscan, argued theology is a means of exercising one’s love of God into a more profound understanding of God. Which one appeals more to you?
