Built into the wall at 36, rue Vaugirard in Paris lives the last standard meter. An artifact of standardization and science on public display. It is a retrospective harbinger of another possible science: overt, open, understandable, and shared. Instead, modern science took an obscurer path—one from which we reap both the benefits of technology, but sadly also the losses of social generality.
